What is the purpose of my blog?

This blog is for all communities, especially Deaf communities.

The purposes of this blog:

Creating this blog isn’t to get pity. I’m not here to be just an inspiration porn either. I don’t need that. Several of us Deaf and Disabled communities don’t need that either. Within the travel industry, there’s no denying that there is a lack of representation of Deaf travelers (even other Disabled travelers). It has long been stigmatized – even when they are recognized, it’s often for inspiration porn or tokenism. I’m not saying that there aren’t many amazing Hearing travel bloggers, because there are! However, one of the problems is that several people from the Deaf communities cannot relate to Hearing travel bloggers in some aspects (i.e. communication barrier, strategies, and preparation). Furthermore, several travel contents from Hearing bloggers or brands are not even accessible for the diverse Deaf population (such as lack of closed captions & transcriptions or English isn’t their first language). This is a whole another story that would need its own post. Because of this, I started Deafinitely Wanderlust. I want to talk about accessible travel, Deaf and disability awareness, and create accessible and relatable contents for the Deaf population

Deafinitely Wanderlust is also to empower others by creating spaces for diverse Deaf travelers and Disabled travelers to share their stories, whether it may be written and/or filmed. And of course, I will also share my personal experiences, write some resourceful posts and guides for both Deaf and Hearing communities!

Wait, what about Hearing* audience?

Of course, my Hearing (and Abled) readers, are also valuable! You are also an important population because you’re are all human beings, and we share this world together. There are about 360 million Deaf and Hard of Hearing people around the world. You may know someone who is Deaf, whether it may be a family member, a friend, a colleague or a customer. I hope that this blog will have you to gain awareness and new perspectives. Perhaps even advocate for us too!

I will also talk about another important stigmatized matter: mental health.

I have a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), and I just have to talk about this to destigmatize mental health. On this blog, I will not only share tips and resources but address different matters about mental health & travel. You will find my stories about traveling with depression, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) AND other guest writers’ stories. If you are to worry whether this would become a mental health blog, don’t be. Travel & mental health both do often come together, more than we realized.
